"A great idea ruined by the cheapness of the slats and the space allowed for them to lift out. The slats should be an uncut piece of wood and thinner to allow for water absorption; as it is at the present time it is impossible to get them out of the gaps into which they are now firmly, until later in the year when they have had a chance to dry out, and even then I still don't know if that will happen. Wood used is cheap and nasty and ruins what should have been a clever idea."

"Two compost bins - one with instructions but no screws, the other with screws but no instructions. Very poor quality wood - in each case, needed a hammer to engage the lugs, & in each case one of the bars snapped. I note from your responses to other customer complaints that you use the excuse of wood treatment for poor fitting together - surely therefore you should take steps to leave the treated wood longer to dry before supplying the product! No way would I recommend this product or anything similar from you."

"Ordered three composters. Packaging was fine. On opening the plastic wrapping we found a number of the wood sections were damaged. The composters could still be assembled, it was only the joint end. As long as you put these sections at the bottom it did not cause any problem. It was just a same would have preferred no damaged parts. Instructions where ok. screws where included"

Din't stop them going together OK, but I have a second one to assemble and am tempted to put a panel pin into these areas to prevent them splitting. "I bought two, one only had 3 screws and a few of the end bits had fallen off, one was fine. However I got both of them together ok and they look good and will do the job fine. As long as you're not expecting something precision engineered (they needed a bit of persuasion with a hammer to slot together) then you'll be pleased. They are a good price and hold loads."

"In principle these composters are completely functional, and slot together but when the wood is wet and they are a very tight fit. Using a rubber mallet to locate them snugly works as long as you don't Hit on the end of the plank near the slot as the small bit of wood to the end after the slot falls off, must make sure you only hit the plank on the inside of the slot. Also out of three composters one had all it's screws, one had most it's screws and one had no screws at all. Easily remedied when you are someone with lots of screws knocking around but annoying for others, Primrose may consider attaching screws in the middle of the pack as the ends/corners are well packaged but it doesn't take much for a sharp screw to make a hole and disappear."

"Good for the money, BUT: 1. They were soaking wet when they arrived, it was a few days before I could erect them and they were slimy. 2. The screws are in very flimsy bags which broke in all three of the packages, The screws were all over the place, I found only 14 over the three packages, had to replace 28. 3. "We are struggling to fit it together, for two reasons: the wood is not pre-drilled so for someone with minimal skills in this area it is not a possibility, the wood is damp so we can't get the base pieces into the slots yet. "Quality very good, just one gripe.....the side strengthening bars proved to be a puzzle.... . the picture showed them starting at the base but they didn't reach the top which mean't that they only overlapped the top bar by 2''. "Product is as described. Ordered 3 bins; there were a couple of broken pieces which didn't matter much. Unlike some reviews they were not the least bit difficult to assemble. Only quibble is that the side pieces are bit short making the final side pieces impossible to secure with the screws ... so used some old pieces of timber from my shed to fix them ... no great problem. The broken bits + short sides make this rating Good instead of Excellent."

After investigating the cost of buying wood to make another one I decided it was not worth it when I could buy a kit ready to assemble, probably cheaper. "De opmerkingen op internet had ik gelezen maar ondanks dat heb ik toch besloten de bestelling te plaatsen. De kritiek op internet klopte. De pakketten waren van binnen nat, van een paar planken was een hoekje af en bij een pakket ontbraken de schroeven. Voor mijn gevoel is het nat zijn niet erg maar in de emotiele beleving zou een droog pakket (geeft een verzorgd gevoel) beter over komen. De hoekjes (naast de zaagsneden) zijn er kwetsbaar. Ik zou daar eens naar kijken of dat te verbeteren is. De missende schroeven mag niet.. Terugkijkend stel ik vast dat ik hele dure planken heb gekocht. Maar het is mjin keuze geweest. "I'd read the reviews on the product so I expected it to be wet when unwrapped, but also found that four of the jointed ends had broken corners and the screws were missing. Unperturbed, I laid it all flat and dried it out for a couple of days before (very gently!) tapping it together with rubber mallet, and spending a few pence on the 14 screws required. No further breakages, and it's still completely functional, so not worth the hassle of messing the supplier around requesting replacement pieces etc. I would definitely recommend the product, but the quality control/handling could be improved."

"- 1. Verticle boards need to be 5 cm longer 2. Would help to have pre-drilled holes for the screws, at least in the verticle boards (wood is very hard, I needed to drill the holes to enable the screws to be used, and some people could not do that). Thanks"

"Timber quality was poor. Some of the cuts had been made badly and at least two joints split/broke off during careful and gentle assembly. Since neither was vital I have not returned the product, but only because of the additional trouble involved"

"There were no screws with the compost bin so I had to buy them. The side panels could have been pre-drilled and needed to be about another 4-5 cms in length - slightly short to properly accommodate the 7 screws."

"The slots were badly cut so I had to sand each one down so that it would fit together. There were no pilot holes drilled, which meant that construction was much more labor intensive than an average flat pack. One of the slots was broken in the wrapping. Once it is built though, it looks well and it does what it says on the tin."

"I ordered the large bin but the web site has no measurements but just cubic capacity which means little and is no help in fitting a bin to a space which is critical in an urban garden. I think the hight could have provided anothe flrxibility as I would have prefered it to be deeper and as the front is made of loose slats extra hight would present no difficulty in either filling or emptying."

"Disappointed with the composter. Joints so tight boards don't sit fully into each other. When I tried to gently persuade a joint to fit together with a rubber mallet, as suggested, the joint split and a section of the board came away. One board was split from the joint over half way along the board needing two fixings to stabalise it, and the top narrow finishing board was rotten and soft at one end. To round off the experience the two upright side supporting boards were too short to reach the top of the composter leaving me to add two extra pieces of treated batten just to pick up and support the top two boards! Needless to say I won't be ordering another one and won't be able to recomend that anyone else should."

"First the good aspects - the kit arrived promptly, the instructions were clear and all the parts were there. Less impressed with the fact that on one set at least the wood had been so recently treated with what looked like a copper solution that it was wet to the touch. This made it slippy and together with several badly cut notches meant I struggled to fit the kit together until my partner took it all away and recut a large number of joints. Some of the boards had already splintered off (where there was a knot in the wood )when I took them out of the packet,some were a couple of mms thicker than others (making the fit difficult.) The final good aspect is that now both bins are up and in use they do the job well and I still like the overall design with a removeable front. Maybe I was just expecting rather a lot for a bargain price. "

"You advised me that it wasn't in stock and an estimated date for delivery, and I was delighted that it came days before that. There was some slight damage to a couple of the pieces of wood, but I repaired these easily with wood glue. The upright piece of wood does not work if you follow the instructions as the gap is too big using another piece as a spacer. Finally, no screws were enclosed. However, it is just what I wanted and I was happy with the price so minor issues aside I would still recommend."

"I bought 2 of these compost bin kits and, for the money, they will do the job. However, where the front slats fit into the bin, I had to enlarge every cut-out both on the front pieces slotting in and on the side planks into which the front pieces slot. Had I not done this, pieces would have broken off as the slots were far too tight - they need to be easy to slot in and one has to bear in mind that wood swells in the fullness of time, which would have made the problem even worse - if not impossible. Why can't Primrose make the correct cut in the first place?"

"I loved the idea of this compost bin as it appeared to marry aethestics, functionality and price well. In reality the quality is slightly variable (I bought two) but this was more than made up for by the customer service in sorting out a problem with one fo teh two I was sent. If I were selling these I would probably write and include my own set of instructions to make up for the manufacturer's lack of them. "

"A problem I found was that the timber components had been wrapped hermetically for some time and the wood had swollen with the humidity and it was difficult to get some members into the slots. I have actually planed the front members and widened their slots slightly so that they slide into position more easily without risk of splitting the side member at its slot - as happened once. While I appreciate the manufacturing advantage of having the slots all the same size, it would be better if the slots relating to the front members were a little wider. It would be good to suggest that the packs are opened and the contents kept in a dry place for a day or two for the swelling of the timber to subside."

"I was surprised that the holes were not pre-drilled to make it easier to construct. Also on the front of 2 of the side slats the wood was broken so the removable slats do not sit at an angle and the compost keeps falling out. "Delivered the next day - fantastic! The product itself is also excellent (and outstanding value). A minor design flaw is that the vertical wooden pieces, to which the side panels are screwed, need to be about 10 cm longer for a proper fit when building the bin. A couple of the screws were missing from the broken packaging.These packages had clearly been standing in the rain for months as there was a healthy growth of mould on some of the saturated timber. Let's hope the 15 year guarantee can cover the extra time in the rain! Even so, it all slotted together painlessly and quickly and the design provides an ingenious and effective solution to accessing the compost. They even look good."

"Came with no instructions as to how to put it together. I found a video on YouTube - with no sound! A great deal smaller than expected, and seems to be untreated. I had to stain it to give me some confidence it would last. Arrived soggy and with bits broken from the wooden pieces. Altogether I am pretty unimpressed and would build my own next time. It is far from "easy" to load as the wooden slats are nothing but a nuisance. I'll use 4 pallets next time."
